HCAD iFile: Step-by-Step Walkthrough for Your 2026 Property Tax Protest

Published May 14, 2026 · AppealMyTax

What is HCAD iFile?

iFile is the Harris Central Appraisal District's online portal for filing property tax protests. It replaces paper Form 50-132 with an electronic submission and lets you upload evidence directly. Free to use, available during the active protest filing window (April 1 through May 15).

Before you start

Have ready:

  • Your HCAD account number (13 digits, no dashes — on your appraisal notice)
  • Your property address as it appears in HCAD records
  • Evidence: 5–10 comparable property addresses with assessed values, sqft, year built, bed/bath
  • A short paragraph explaining your argument

If you don't have your HCAD account number, search by address at hcad.org/property-search.

Step 1: Access iFile

Go to hcad.org and click the iFile link. Create an account using your HCAD account number and verification PIN (mailed with your notice).

Step 2: File the protest

Find your property, click "File Protest." Select BOTH grounds:

  • Value is over market value (TX §23.01)
  • Unequal appraisal (TX §41.43(b)(3))

Always check BOTH — they are independent legal arguments.

Step 3: Upload evidence

Accepts PDF, JPG, PNG up to 25MB. If you bought our $49 packet, upload the whole PDF — protest letter, comp evidence sheet, and instructions are all included.

Step 4: Write your argument (300 words max)

Template:

Subject property is assessed at $X. Comparable properties in the same neighborhood, with similar square footage (Y), year built (Z), and bed/bath count, are assessed at a median of $W per sqft. Under TX Tax Code §41.43(b)(3) unequal appraisal, the subject property's assessment should be adjusted to median comparable value. Request reduction to $W.

Step 5: Choose your panel

1-member panel is right for most cases. Faster (2–4 weeks), more informal, single appraiser. Most settle with an informal offer.

3-member panel is for $5K+ stakes. Slower (6–12 weeks), more formal.

For typical homeowners with under $3,000/year at stake, choose 1-member.

Step 6: Save the case number

After Submit, iFile displays your case number. Save it. You'll need it to track status or schedule a hearing.

If iFile is slow or down

HCAD's iFile gets heavy traffic on deadline day. If unresponsive:

  • Try again in 30 minutes
  • File by paper as backup (Form 50-132 to Northwest Freeway office before midnight)
  • HCAD accepts filings postmarked by the deadline

The full deadline is Thursday May 15, 2026 at 11:59 PM CT — file tonight to avoid the crush.

Check Your Houston Address

Free calculator pulls HCAD comps in 30 seconds. Optional $49 packet pre-fills your iFile protest.
