How property tax appeals work in Galveston County
Every Texas homeowner has a right to protest their assessed value under Texas Property Tax Code §41.41. In Galveston County, protests are handled by the Galveston Central Appraisal District (GCAD). The deadline is May 15, 2026 — or 30 days after your appraisal notice was mailed, whichever is later.
GCAD waterfront and coastal properties are notoriously hard to appraise. If your home is more than 500 feet inland from comparable waterfront, you may be overpaying.
The strongest protests include 3-7 comparable sales from the last 12 months in your immediate neighborhood, adjusted for square footage, age, and condition. Galveston / League City-area assessors typically reduce values when presented with clear, recent comp data.
